Just Because it’s not in the news anymore

by @ 6:34 pm. Filed under Uncategorized

Myth one
“It’s just a tiny percentage of priests who commit these crimes.”
For more than a decade, numerous church leaders in America and in Rome emphatically claimed 1% or even less than 1% of priests molested children. By American bishops own self-survey, the “bare minimum” true figure is at least 4%.

Myth three
NIMDY “not in MY diocese. . ..”
The document apparently indicates that abuse allegations surfaced in more than 95% of America’s 194 Catholic dioceses.

More Myths on Snap or read the Reuters news article that reports the number of molested children at more then 10,600 - when is it enough?

The Fork in the Road: A Political Morality Play in One Act

The Keaton family was a peculiar family, they made every decision democratically. Their democratic tradition was a new one as far as family decision making in the world was concerned, but they were confident in their little democracy and stood by it as the fount of their shared happiness. Every choice they made was voted on, and the majority decided. And that was how the Keaton family navigated the choices that families make in this world. For better or worse, they had faith in their peculiar system.

Bored in Massachusetts

Geez, and I thought Virginia was bad. I’ve spent all week sequestered in a hotel in Burlington, Mass and working 12 hour days, with nothing to do for miles around.

Exercise

In early Jan, I weighed 210. Then I saw this guy’s website.

That helped me to motivate to get in shape - I started working out on a step machine that we bought, watched the diet, and began working out with dumbells.

Now I’m 196 - almost halfway to my goal of 180 -my waist has lost inches and I’m starting to grow a muscle.

When I get home - I’ll put up the before and after pictures. Not bad for a month and a half.

Union of Concerned Scientists - Bush Administration distorts scientific findings

by @ 4:44 pm. Filed under political perspective

“…
The Bush administration’s misuse of science threatens to undermine this legacy. Specifically, the administration has distorted and suppressed scientific findings at federal agencies that contradict administration policies; undermined the independence of science advisory panels by subjecting panel nominees to political litmus tests that have little or no bearing on their expertise; nominated underqualified individuals, or individuals with industry ties, to advisory panels; and disbanded some science advisory committees altogether.”

Papers Please

by @ 1:12 pm. Filed under The Courts

One balmy May evening back in 2000, Dudley was standing around minding his own business when all of a sudden, a policeman pulled-up and demanded that Dudley produce his ID. Dudley, having done nothing wrong, declined. He was arrested and charged with “failure to cooperate” for refusing to show ID on demand. And it’s all on video.

Don Henley - Killing the Music

by @ 1:00 pm. Filed under Music

“…Contrary to conventional wisdom, the root problem is not the artists, the fans or even new Internet technology. The problem is the music industry itself. It’s systemic. The industry, which was once composed of hundreds of big and small record labels, is now controlled by just a handful of unregulated, multinational corporations determined to continue their mad rush toward further consolidation and merger. Sony and BMG announced their agreement to merge in November, and EMI and Time Warner may not be far behind. The industry may soon be dominated by only three multinational corporations.”

Run of bad scope luck

by @ 10:08 pm. Filed under Guns and such

When I originally put together my rifle system, I used some cheap Weaver mounts and rings on my Savage to attach my scope. Hey - I figured that I needed more skill then super precise mounting equipment - I would upgrade when my skill increased.

Last time I took my scope off, I noticed that the mounts were wearing away - rounding out the grooves. So - I decided to go ahead and upgrade to a nice Leupold single base mounts and fairly nice rings. Thus began my downfall.
