John von Neumann (December 28, 1903 – February 8, 1957) was a Hungarian American mathematician who made major contributions to a vast range of fields,[1] including set theory, functional analysis, quantum mechanics, ergodic theory, continuous geometry, economics and game theory, computer science, numerical analysis, hydrodynamics (of explosions), and statistics, as well as many other mathematical fields. He is generally regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians in modern history.[2] The mathematician Jean Dieudonné called von Neumann “the last of the great mathematicians”,[3] while Peter Lax described him as possessing the most “fearsome technical prowess” and “scintillating intellect” of the century.[4] Even in Budapest, in the time that produced geniuses like Szilárd (1898), Wigner (1902), and Teller (1908), his brilliance stood out.[5]

Von Neumann was a pioneer of the application of operator theory to quantum mechanics, in the development of functional analysis, a principal member of the Manhattan Project and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (as one of the few originally appointed), and a key figure in the development of game theory[1][6] and the concepts of cellular automata[1] and the universal constructor. Along with Edward Teller and Stanislaw Ulam, von Neumann worked out key steps in the nuclear physics involved in thermonuclear reactions and the hydrogen bomb.

As happens to everybody eventually, we had the family crisis/drama event hit around Christmas. One of the things I learned quickly was that I was going to need a way to take and save lots of notes. I fired up the iphone notes application and went to town.

The default notes application is actually quite good. It’s reasonably responsive and functional, and not hard to sort your way through and forward notes. The one place it really sucks is in backing up and saving those items. At one point I hit a bug in the ipod app where it lost it’s music database. It still say that it had 12 gigs of music content on the phone, but if I tried to play any, the ipod application didn’t see any content. In an attempt to fix that, I tried a firmware reload and restore from backup – no dice. So I tried reload without restore. Guess where my notes went? Of course, they all disappeared.

My own fault – what did I really think would happen with a total data wipe? But yea, I’d hit this before – I need a notes application that supports a non-volatile data storage function.

Since I’d seen positive reviews of Evernote in the past, I thought I’d give it a try.

So – here’s my one hour review:

Easy to use and get started. Install app and create account, and you’re ready to go.

Interface is functional and intuitive

You can get some lag as app attempts to sync data

Being able to access notes and data from any web browser at any location is golden

Support for voice recording and pictures is a plus

Price – free, is golden

So unless something breaks, I think this is my new notes system.
