Study: U.S. Workers Waste $3.9 Billion a Year by Not Telecommuting

I’ve been saying this for a long time – the amount of money wasted by maintaining full time offices/electricity/etc is just pointless. Add to that traffic, high cost of gas, weather, potential terrorist attacks or calamity – every organization out there should have a teleworking policy. And the best way to ensure that everyone is prepared for working remotely is to have all employees do it once a week.

College Park, Md. — People who drive to work could save a total of $3.9 billion a year in fuel costs and save time equal to 470,000 new jobs in the economy if they telecommuted less than two days a week, according to a new study by the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business and technology research firm Rockbridge Associates. According to the study, while a quarter of all workers have the ability to work from home at least part of the time, only 11% are actually doing so. “With national gas prices hovering near $3 a gallon, American workers could suffer less pain at the pump if they took advantage of workplace telecommuting policies,” said Roland Rust, executive director of the Smith School’s Center for Excellence in Service. “In addition to saving billions of dollars to the economy, the time and money saved on a long commute — even just two days a week — could significantly increase productivity and employee satisfaction.”
