Tips from the Sunday mechanic

Before changing the oil in your 2000-ish Toyota 4Runner, remove the skid plate.

This will:
a) keep you from losing the drain plug
b) reduce the number of oil spills in your garage from 3 to 1 (or potentially none, with proper oil pan replacement)
c) prevent you from having to answer the neighbor’s kid from across the street that yes, it would potentially be faster just to take it to ‘that lube place’.
d) keep the wife from asking why you thought you could attempt a complicated mechanical process like an oil change without being a certified mechanic.
