Federal Officials Indict D.C. Tax Office Employees

In a mammoth corruption scam that went unnoticed for at least four years, two D.C. government employees entrusted with city tax revenues stole more than $16 million using phony tax refunds, prosecutors alleged today.

Authorities called it the largest theft ever uncovered in local government in the Washington metropolitan area. And they’re still counting money and seizing records to determine if they have caught it all. Of the missing money, less than $2 million in bank accounts has been located so far, according to an affidavit filed in court this morning.
